Aging is a physiological process consequent of the life cycle.it is the natural process where our skin gradually loses its ability to repair, renew, and maintain firmness over time — influenced both by biology and lifestyle factors.
It is the natural, gradual process of change that occurs in living organisms over time. In humans, it involves progressive biological, physical, and sometimes psychological changes that happen as cells, tissues, and organs accumulate wear, damage, and reduced regenerative capacity.
Aging is affected by intrinsic and extrinsic factors.
Intrinsic ageing (also known as chronological ageing) is the natural, biological process that occurs over time. It is influenced by internal factors such as genetics, metabolism, lifestyle, sleep quality, and overall health. Over time, the skin’s ability to repair and regenerate slows down, leading to gradual structural and functional changes.
Extrinsic ageing is driven by external environmental factors. The most significant contributor is UV radiation, which leads to photoageing. Other factors such as pollution, environmental stressors, smoking, and lifestyle habits further accelerate visible skin ageing.
Together, these factors influence how the skin ages—both at the cellular level and in its visible appearance.

THE BIOLOGICAL DRIVERS OF AGEING
Skin aging is driven by a limited number of core biological processes.
Dermaceutique focuses on three primary drivers that determine how the skin changes over time.
1. Oxidation
Oxidation is a process in which unstable molecules, known as free radicals, damage healthy skin cells.
Over time, this leads to the breakdown of collagen, elastin, and other essential structures, weakening the skin and accelerating visible ageing.
External factors such as UV exposure and pollution significantly increase the rate of this process.
2. Regenerative Decline (Collagen & Cell Renewal)
As the skin ages, its ability to renew and repair gradually slows.
Collagen production decreases, cell turnover becomes less efficient, and the skin loses its capacity to maintain structure and resilience.
This results in thinning, reduced firmness, and a decline in overall skin quality.
3. Glycation
Glycation is a process in which sugars bind to proteins such as collagen and elastin.
This leads to the formation of Advanced Glycation End Products (A.G.E.s), which stiffen and weaken these structural fibers.
Over time, this contributes to loss of elasticity, firmness, and visible skin ageing.
All visible signs of ageing can be traced back to one—or a combination—of these processes.
